Mexico’s Day of Mischief: Día de los Santos Inocentes
Every December 28, Mexicans turn up the fun with Día de los Santos Inocentes, the country’s version of April Fools' Day.
But this day of pranks has surprisingly deep — and somewhat dark — roots.
The day originates from the Bible’s account of King Herod’s decree to kill all baby boys under the age of two in Bethlehem — aiming to eliminate the prophesied King of the Jews, baby Jesus. Heavy, right?
So how did this solemn event evolve into a lighthearted day of pranks in Mexico?
Mexican culture blends the serious with the playful like no other. Over time, this day evolved into one of mischief and trickery.
The phrase, “Inocente palomita que te dejaste engañar” (Innocent little dove, you let yourself be fooled) is how pranksters proudly reveal their tricks.
Here’s what to expect on December 28:
Beware the Borrowers: If someone asks to borrow money or your favorite mug, say no! Anything lent today might not come back.
Media Hoaxes: Newspapers and TV stations run fake stories — from UFO sightings to miracle cures.
Family Pranks: From little jokes to big tricks, everyone is fair game.
Another tradition involves hiding the baby Jesús figurine from nativity scenes. This custom symbolizes keeping Jesus safe from Herod’s soldiers. Some families sometimes turn it into a scavenger hunt.
Día de los Santos Inocentes is a perfect example of Mexico’s love for community, resilience, and fun.
If you get duped, just laugh along and remember: “Inocente palomita” — you’re part of the tradition now!
